Project Description

This department uses microscopy, culture techniques, chemical tests and antigen/antibody tests to determine if an infection is present, what microorganism may be causing the infection and which treatment may be most effective.

Results of these tests can be received within 1 to 4 working days depending on the test/s requested.

Some microbiology and parasitology tests include:

Can help detect urinary tract infections, kidney problems, diabetes and liver problems.

This test is performed to grow and identify organisms, mainly those which may cause a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). The antibiotic sensitivity test helps to select an antibiotic that is effective against the infection.

This test is used to detect the presence of organisms in the throat that could cause infection and determine which antibiotic may be most effective in treating the infection.

This test is used to determine the presence of infection in wounds and which antibiotic may be most effective in treating the infection.

This test is used to help doctors determine if there is a bacterial infection present in the ear and which antibiotic may be most effective in treating the infection.

This test is used to diagnose upper respiratory infections which can cause symptoms such as cough and runny nose. The effectiveness different antibiotics in treating the infection is also checked as some antibiotics may be more effective than others.

This test is used to determine the presence of an infection in the urethral trach and which antibiotic may be most effective in treating the infection.

This test is used to help identify vaginal infections. It looks for the growth of bacteria in vaginal secretions. The effectiveness different antibiotics in treating the infection is also checked as some antibiotics may be more effective than others.

Helps detect blood in stool that may not be visually apparent.

This procedure is used to look for parasites that may infect the lower digestive tract, causing symptoms such as diarrhea. The parasites and their eggs (ova) are shed from the lower digestive tract into the stool.

This test is used to detect bacteria in the lower digestive tract that may be causing an infection and which antibiotic may be most effective in treating the infection. In this test bacteria that are normally found in the digestive tract are differentiated from the bacteria that is pathogenic.

A semen analysis is used to find out if a problem with semen or sperm may be causing a man’s infertility. The test may also be used to see if a vasectomy has been successful.

Used to determine bacterial pathogens in semen culture and determine the antibiotic susceptibility of any pathogenic organisms identified.

Can help detect including urinary tract infections, kidney problems, diabetes and liver problems.
